Cork, Ireland - Day 1

Friday, July 14, 2017

It was an easy flight from Louisville to Chicago to Dublin. We left our home around 2 pm and landed in Dublin at 7:15 am. Our overseas flight was captained by a small outdoorsy woman named Yolanda who looked to be my age and greeted us as we boarded the plane. Impressive.

We caught a cab at the airport to the train station -- 30 euros with tip, but well worth it for the convenience and the mini tour guide. As Rick Steves has pointed out in his podcasts, the Irish love to talk, especially about their country, and all of our drivers today imparted valuable information.

Since we arrived earlier than expected, a friendly assistant at the train station showed us how to use our pre-purchased tickets for an earlier departure. Very easy. We took the 9 am train and arrived in Cork at 12:30. Another colorful cab ride through the city center and we arrived at the River Lee Hotel, our home for the next 5 nights. Very modern with great views, as seen below.

We checked in early, had a delicious lunch at Liberty Grill down the street and caught up on sleep the rest of the afternoon.

Tonight we had dinner at the Bistro in the hotel. Then we went to The Everyman Theater, a famous venue dating from the Victorian era, and saw a hilarious play entitled "Second Honeymoon." Set in a B&B, it involved the interactions of 3 couples, the uptight proprietor, the lusty maid and several other characters.

Back to Hotel for a cappuccino in the exec lounge and bedtime.
