Riquewihr, France - Day 13

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Our last day on the boat and another gorgeous day. We docked in Breisach, Germany, and were bused about an hour to Riquewihr, in the heart of Alsace. Surrounded by vineyards, this is one of the most beautiful villages in France, with only about 1500 inhabitants. It appears to have been unchanged for the last 400-500 years, largely escaping damage during WW II. Interestingly, we drove through another village about 20 miles away that had been decimated by the war and had been rebuilt in a more modern style.
Although we had a tour, most of what is noteworthy is just to walk around the colorful streets and enjoy the ambiance. There is really only one Main Street with anything historic.

It is a popular tourist destination and filled with pastry and candy shops. Here are the famous macaroons.

There is even a one-star Michelin restaurant here.

The best way to remember the day is just through the photos.

Place Fernand Zeyer and town hall

Rue du General de Gaulle where most of the houses, shops and restaurants are located.

The town is still surrounded by medieval walls (behind us)

We returned to the boat around 11:30 and the boat left at 11:45 for Basel. We spent the afternoon resting and packing for our extended stay in Switzerland.
Tonight we enjoyed having dinner again with new friends. Ed said that meeting so many nice people was the highlight of the cruise.
